What is
Hantavirus?

Hantavirus is a potentially fatal zoonotic disease transmitted to humans primarily through contact with infected rodents or their excreta. It causes Hantavirus Pulmonary Syndrome (HPS) in the Americas and Hemorrhagic Fever with Renal Syndrome (HFRS) in Europe and Asia.

The disease progresses rapidly, often appearing as flu-like symptoms before sudden onset of respiratory distress. There is no specific cure — treatment is supportive, making early recognition and hospitalisation critical to survival.

  • CFRCase fatality rate of ~38% for HPS without aggressive ICU care
  • VECPrimary vector: Peromyscus maniculatus (deer mouse) in North America
  • TRSTransmitted via aerosolised rodent urine, faeces, and saliva
  • INCIncubation period: 1–8 weeks following exposure
  • RXNo approved vaccine; Ribavirin shows 30–40% mortality reduction
